What is Crowdfunding?
Crowdfunding is when teachers use platforms to raise money. Just like its name, “crowd-funding” means gathering funds from a crowd of people. DonorsChoose.com and GoFundMe.com are well-known crowdfunding sites where multiple people contribute money towards a common cause. Crowdfunding for classroom-related needs has gained popularity in recent years. Teachers can use these platforms to raise money for anything!
Here are some important things to know about crowdfunding:
Do’s of Crowdfunding
- Choose a project with a specific goal in mind. This will make donors more likely to choose your project. Explain how your donations will be used.
- Simple and easy to create, there are no grant writing skills necessary.
- Document donations for tax purposes.
- Communicate to your friends, family, and parents, and share the link to your project widely.
Don’ts of Crowdfunding
- Don’t overshare. It is important to keep student demographics and identities private.
- Your school may have specific guidelines or regulations with crowdfunding so check out those policies first.
- It may cause inequities. If one teacher is receiving hundreds of dollars of supplies and tools, other classrooms within the same school may feel left out.

I am a professional pianist. I have worked as a dsp at a few group homes and none of them had the opportunity for the kids or adults with Autism any musical prigrams which I have done alot of research on because I want to be able to create a musical piano program for any child or adult with Autism that would be interesrted. I have no degree but I have performed in 3 countries and have played for many years since age 3. I am 73 now and on my bucket list the only thing I really feel I want the most is to show the piano keyboard to some kids in group homes. I have seen these people in homes withpout getting any meaningful outlets and they get irritable and negative. But I have seen a little girl who was banging her head against a luch table when I was a volunteer at a senior recreation center lunchon stop abruptly, stand up and sing every word to the song I was playing on the puiano there, it was YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE and there was not a dry eye in the audience. Music is a miracle for these kids and I am in Oregon and unfortunately as a dsp I have only witnessed some abuse that I reported and alot of troubled young people who need an outlet. I need a grant to get this startefd and to help me get by while I find a good marketing strategy. These homes are not always open to thing like this but if it was an official program I would think it would fly in fact I believe it should be mandatory for those who want to experience this class for individuals I want to start. Any ideas?

Hello Julia! Thank you for your comment. The work that you do is inspiring and sounds like such a fantastic area of opportunity for this population. Perhaps the grant from this organization may be useful in helping to bridge the gap until you get things up and rolling: https://www.music-movement.org/.

TARGET does not have a form for direct application for a grant. The link you shared goes to a page that has a FAQ "How do I apply for a grant?" with the answer. "the majority of applications are by invitation only", and there is no way to apply.

Tina, thank you for letting us know. Sometimes organizations update their grant process and related links, so this may be part of the reason why the application is no longer accessible.
